Jill Beattie

Monash University, VIC, Australia

Jill has a background in nursing practice including education, management, research and private consultancy. She has just completed a body of work with SMICS looking a supportive care in cancer, survivorship, and plan of care documentation in haematology/oncology day care units. She is well-versed in research methodology, in particular participatory action research and critical postmodern approaches, and has expertise in using different methodologies to explore alternative approaches for improving the delivery of health care in a variety of contexts. Her research has included nurses, medical doctors, pharmacists, consumers, primary school children, their families, managers of health care facilities, and partners of defence force personnel and their children. Consequently Jill has significant experience in working in partnership with consumers, health professionals and health care managers in the conduct of health care research. A common theme arising in Jill’s research has been the increased stress levels experienced by consumers, health professionals and managers in contemporary society, which impacts on the health of individuals and delivery of healthcare. Jill is currently leading an RCT measuring the effects of mindfulness training compared with a pregnancy support group, on maternal stress and depressed mood. In addition, to her current research, she is interested in mindfulness-based programs for cancer survivors, with the veteran and military community, and for health professionals working in emergency departments who are exposed to increasing levels of violence.
